Our Commitment to an Excellent Work Environment
Roots is dedicated to providing a workplace where all employees are treated with dignity and respect. Roots also strives to create an environment where individuals have the freedom to express their views and concerns openly. Our open door policy allows all staff to address any concerns in an anonymous confidential manner.

Roots recruits, develops, rewards and retains its employees solely on the basis of merit, ability and performance.

Roots is an equal opportunity employer. All employment decisions are made without regard to race, sex, religion, age, ethic origin or any other prohibited grounds. Roots has long been proud of the diversity of its staff, which it considers a great strength of the company.

Roots Cares
Designed by a committee of Roots staff from across Canada, the Roots Cares program allows employees to raise funds and provides paid volunteer time, with the support of Roots, to help the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada develop the organization’s Roots & Shoots global youth action program throughout the country.

The Jane Goodall Institute is a global non-profit organization that empowers people to make a difference for all living things. Founded in 1994, the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada supports community conservation programs in Africa, sanctuaries for orphaned chimpanzees, and the Roots & Shoots program in Canada.

Many Roots employees are engaged in initiating and contributing to projects that address issues in their own communities. “We have always had a commitment to giving back to the community, especially in places in which we operate,” says Roots Co-Founder Don Green. This program represents an opportunity for Roots employees to link arms and make an impact in their own communities.

The Roots Cares program is focused on one of the company’s core values: respect for nature and concern for the environment. This partnership makes it easier for Roots employees to help extend Dr. Goodall’s work to create healthy ecosystems, promote sustainable livelihoods and nurture new generations of committed, active citizens around the world.

“Roots and its employees across the country and around the world are to be congratulated,” said Dr. Jane Goodall at the launch of Roots Cares in April 2009. “It is initiatives like this one that give me hope that we can and will overcome the huge problems that face our world today.”

Roots staff have been enthusiastic in their welcome of the Roots Cares program. “The ongoing commitment to community and the environment are one of the many reasons I chose to align myself with Roots,” says Debbie Barnes-Scallion, Roots store manager in Vancouver since 1997. “As an employee, it’s very important to me that the company I represent holds the same morals and integrity that I do. I’m so proud to be helping develop a program that every member of the Roots team can participate in.”
