The strong connection between Roots and Canada runs deep. Starting with the company’s official name (Roots Canada Ltd.), logo (a Canadian beaver) and birthplace (Toronto), Roots would be an entirely different business if it were not for Canada. The country has been at the heart of Roots ever since it began in 1973.

From its retail presence to its manufacturing, head office and sources of inspiration, Canada has always had a predominant role at Roots. It is an intrinsic part of the personality and sensibility of the company.

To this day, Roots makes all its genuine leather goods at its state-of-the-art factory in Toronto. Wherever possible, it makes other products in Canada. All merchandise is designed at the Toronto Head Office. Roots employs nearly 2,000 people in Canada, and contributes to the employment of thousands more working with Canadian suppliers and through other activities. For licensed products, Roots partners with Canadian companies.

Roots has also always been a supporter of Canadian charities, athletes and entertainers. Giving preference to causes that help children and the environment, Roots works closely with mostly Canadian charities (see Community Support section). The company has a special employee engagement program called Roots Cares. Partnering with the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada and more specifically its Roots and Shoots program, the initiative helps to both create a new generation of committed, active citizens in Canada and to protect the environment.

Roots has always been a big proponent of Canadian athletes and sports in general. Currently, Roots supports world champion kayaker Adam van Koeverden. Over the years, we have also supported Kurt Browning, Catriona Le May Doan, Razor Ruddock and many other amateur athletes.

Roots is an independently-owned Canadian company that is proud of its Canadian identity and heritage. It is forever thankful of the tremendous loyalty and support that Canadians have always have demonstrated for Roots, making it one of the country’s most celebrated brands.
